Japan… Penis festival?

Every Spring people flock to Kawasaki, Japan to participate in Kanamara Matsuri or “Festival of the Steel Phallus”. The festival is a celebration of the penis.

According to legend, a demon took residence in the lady parts of an inn keeper’s daughter shortly before her wedding. After the wedding her new husband went to consummate the marriage and the demon bit his penis off. Shortly after another suitor suffered the same fate.

The town’s blacksmith came up with a clever plan and crafted a steel penis to trick the demon. When the demon chomped into the metal shaft his teeth shattered. The demon fled and the blacksmith married the inn keeper’s daughter.

All the money raised at the festival helps fund HIV awareness and research.
