The thong is a garment generally worn as either underwear, or in some countries abroad, as a swimsuit. This under garment, when viewed from the front resembles a standard bikini bottom, however from the rear, it's got minimal fabric and exposes most of the buttocks, with a small triangle or portion of fabric stitched into the waistband, as a style. The thin fabric goes in-between the buttocks and is connected to the top waistband portion, that is circumscribed around the woman's hips, using far less than a standard bikini bottom.

Thongs may also be worn for traditional ceremonies or competitions, such as in the sumo wrestling of Japan. Viewed from the front, the thong typically resembles a bikini bottom, but at the back the material is reduced to a minimum, focused on exposing the buttocks.
